New residents are moving here in record numbers, but we still have a labor shortage in retail, service and hospitality sectors. We have more people but fewer critical frontline workers. This Development Guide is a snapshot of the current condition in our urban center, so we can prioritize strategies to enhance the things we love about this special place as St. Petersburg continues to rise.
Downtown St. Pete has experienced significant development activity over the past five years, in particular residential development. This activity is not only making way for population gains, but shifts over time in the demographic makeup of the residents. This includes a rise in educational attainment, share of owners, renter incomes, and a very slight uptick in median age. However development of office, commercial, retail, medical, and cultural spaces are equally important to the evolving culture and placemaking of our Downtown. The following table gives an overview of the developments proposed and under construction as of December 2022.
